Dietitians in the health system

Background

According to a 2013 national survey conducted by the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, close to a quarter of Canadians consider their health and eating habits to be poor or fair yet the majority say that maintaining good health (88%), weight management or body image (73%) and gaining energy or stamina (70%) influence the food choices they make. Further, another poll by Ipsos Reid conducted for Dietitians of Canada (2012) noted that 94% of Canadians rate the registered dietitian as a credible source of nutrition information while only 22% have access to a registered dietitian.

Dietitians work in all areas of the health system, including the publicly funded and private system, to help Canadians reach their optimal health. Dietitians of Canada is a member of coalitions that advocate to protect and strengthen Canada's health system such as the Health Action Lobby (HEAL) and the Canadian Coalition for Public Health in the 21st Century.
