Objective: To determine factors associated with use and non-use of the Glycemic Index (GI) concept by Canadian dietitians in the nutritional management of diabetes mellitus. Hypothesis: Dietitians who “use” Glycemic Index will be more likely to have greater perceived benefits, fewer perceived barriers, greater perceived confidence and higher knowledge scores than “non-users” of Glycemic Index. Methods: A Canada-wide postal survey will be administered to dietitians who are members of Dietitians of Canada and the Ordre Professionnel des Diététistes du Québec using a case-control study design. Users (case-group)and non-users (control-group) of the GI concept will be identified by means of a post-card. These two groups, approximately 1500 dietitians, will then receive the complete survey. Significance: Glycemic Index is an emerging concept that will lead to new roles for dietitians in improving the health status of individuals with diabetes mellitus.
