We’ve all done it. We make a resolution, stick to it for a few months, or maybe just a few days, and end up disappointed when we fail yet again. Why do we do it to ourselves? The start of a new year or the arrival of spring or summer brings thoughts of rejuvenation, and it seems like the perfect time to ‘fix’ our life. So what can we do to help stick to our resolutions?

Start with a reality check. If losing weight and becoming more physically fit is your goal, realize that you didn’t become overweight and out of shape in two weeks, so don’t expect to be slim and fit in two weeks! Excess pounds and poor muscle tone are the result of years of unhealthy eating and inactivity, so a quick fix with radical changes to your eating and activity habits likely won’t work. Some simple ways to stick to your resolutions include:

  • Keep it small and simple. Small simple changes are easier to achieve but can make a huge difference. For example, a switch from two 8-ounce (250 mL) glasses of homogenized milk every day to 2% milk will save you 8 grams of fat a day and 26,280 calories in a year. This could mean up to an 8 pound (3.6 kg) annual weight loss! Just a little change but a big result.
  • ‘Unpair’ unhealthy behaviours. If you know that you over-eat calorie-rich foods when you watch TV, change one of these behaviours—watch less TV, or remove these foods from your reach.
  • Make your resolutions public and write them down. Committing to your resolutions shows you’re serious about them. Telling a friend or family member can also be helpful as they can be your cheerleaders, offering encouragement and putting you in circumstances that set you up for success.

Stick to your resolutions! A reality check, along with a commitment to small simple steps can start you on the road to success.
