Description

In early 2006, a Pan-Canadian Advisory Committee on Public Health Nutrition Competencies (now named the Pan Canadian Task Force on Public Health Nutrition Practice) was formed in collaboration the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to provide strategic guidance and expert advice on public health nutrition practice enhancement in Canada. The Task Force includes leaders in public health nutrition from across Canada and organization liaisons that bring a variety of perspectives related to public health nutrition education, training, regulation, practice, research and workforce related issues. To date the Task Force has completed:

  •  A review of the literature on competency development for public health nutrition professionals – see Related Documents below;
  • An environmental scan, including key informant interviews, to seek out current issues, gaps and opportunities in the public health nutrition filed in Canada– see Related Documents below;
  • A situational analysis applying The Health Communications Unit (University of Toronto) situational assessment framework, that identified key issues, gaps and recommendations for next steps in the development of public health nutrition competencies – see Related documents below;
  • A consultation process to collect information to strengthen public health nutrition practice in Canada, including a draft definition of practice and discipline specific competencies – see Related documents below. The data was collected and compiled by Angus Reid Strategies and the analysis completed by the Pan Canadian Task Force for Public Health Nutrition Practice. The Technical Report on the Stakeholder Consultation describes methodology, presents the aggregate results; and summarizes key findings.  See Related Documents below;
  • A Recommendations for Action report, in French and English, which details six recommendations in three areas: a national definition of practice, competencies for dietitians in public health nutrition and national leadership and organizational structures. See Related Documents below. The work of the Task Force is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada through Dietitians of Canada.
  • An Overview of Process for Identifying a Definition and Competencies for Public Health Nutrition Practice in Canada.
