The DC Board of Directors is made up of member volunteers who are elected and accountable to the DC membership. The Board devotes time, energy and talent to develop the strategic direction for DC and ensure that it remains strong, vibrant and relevant to our members and the profession.
The Board of Directors has adopted the Policy Governance™
model of governance. Working within a defined set of policies and by-laws, broadly the role of the board is to:
- Set strategic priorities for the organization, to be achieved by the CEO
- Set boundaries, through policies, that describe conditions to be avoided by the CEO
- Assess CEO progress on priorities and monitors compliance with boundaries

- Setting DC’s long-range objectives and priorities. You can review the latest priorities and progress here.
- Assessing the degree to which plans and objectives have been achieved.
- Evaluating the performance of the CEO.
- Making decisions on operating budget.
- Making decisions on membership conditions and fees.
- Selecting the recipients of the Board Awards.

Nine DC members are elected to the Board for the following positions: Chair and the Chair-elect, a director from each of our six regions across Canada and a director representative of students and new professionals.

What is the difference between the Board of Directors and DC staff?
- Board of Directors: Identify organizational strategic priorities based on member input and monitor CEO performance.
- DC CEO: Reports to the Board of Directors and oversees the day-to-day operational management of the organization. Responsible for achieving the priorities identified by the Board by providing direction to DC staff on how and what needs to be accomplished.
- DC Staff: Take action and perform the tasks required to meet the organizational objectives.

Annual General Meeting and Financial Statements
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held every June at the National Conference. All members are invited to attend. The notice of meeting is distributed to members six weeks prior to the meeting.
At the AGM, members vote to appoint a public accountant, confirm the elected Board of Directors and address any other matter identified in the notice of meeting. The annual audited financial statements are also approved by the Board and presented to members with the notice of meeting. Members may vote in person or by proxy.

Bring your talents, energy and passion for the profession to our Board. We encourage members to consider becoming a Board Member or to nominate a colleague. Board members are elected for four-year terms. The nomination period is open from June to the end of November and the election takes place in January. Learn more
