Speaker: Lucia Weiler is a Registered Dietitian and savvy nutrition entrepreneur.  She is a pro at facilitating online workshops that empower professionals to apply their individual strengths for professional and personal success. With over 25 years of experience as a recognized leader in food and nutrition, Lucia has witnessed first-hand the power of strengths-based leadership in helping transform individuals and teams to successfully reach their goals. Lucia is faculty at Humber College Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness and is an active member of the Board of Directors of Dietitians of Canada. Speakers:
Jennifer Neale is a Registered Dietitian in Ottawa, Ontario. She has a Masters Degree from McGill University and is a member of both the College of Dietitians of Ontario and Dietitians of Canada. Jennifer became a Dietitian in 2012 and has been working in various sectors within the world of dietetics ever since. This has included working in community health and diabetes education, private practice, insurance, workplace wellness, and software development. Jennifer opened her own private practice, Nutrition IQ, in 2013 as a side-hustle and moved it to a full-time gig in 2017 after her daughter was born. She loves finding new software to improve productivity and stay relevant in her business.

Alka Chopra is a Registered Dietitian & Certified Diabetes Educator with a wide variety of experiences ranging from research, clinical, educational and management settings. For the past 10 years, Alka has been actively involved in Chronic Disease Management via program planning, individual counselling and delivering professional training workshops. Alka is very passionate about healthcare communication and has recently started a podcast focusing on Healthcare Communication called Health Communication Lab.  Alka is very passionate about teaching via groups, adult education, motivational interviewing & health literacy in the context of chronic disease management.

2:10 to 3:0pm EST  - Why Every Dietitian Needs a Virtual Assistant

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the role of a VA or SMM
  • Identify when to hire out a VA or SMM
  • Identify the benefits of hiring a VA or SMM
  • Learn how to find a VA that is right for your business needs

Speaker: Since 2013, Amanda Hamel has been a full-time community dietitian with many hats (you know how it goes!). What first started as a volunteer gig, turned into a serious side hustle; she's been a social media manager (SMM) and virtual assistant (VA) for dietitians since 2017. Amanda loves helping dietitians trim their workload and prevent the dreaded digital overwhelm, so they finally have the freedom to focus on what really matters -- clients, growing their business and, of course, family!

Attendees will be placed into small groups of up to 10 attendees to discuss topics such as:

1:00pm to 2:05pm EST - How to Build a Successful Small Business From Scratch: 5 Secrets to Turn Your Passion into a Profitable Business

Learning Outcomes:
  • The single most effective way to stand out in the market as a new business and why you must know this as a first-time entrepreneur. 
  • The mindset shift that all new business owners need to have in order to get past startup doubts.

Speaker: Jan Ditchfield teaches first-time entrepreneurs and professionally driven women the effective framework to build a profitable career and master business technology with confidence. Jan is an award-winning social entrepreneur and business educator. With over 20 years of experience in business development, marketing and operations, Jan built her career helping businesses to thrive. She has successfully founded two non-profit organizations, three for profits and has been responsible for over $20 million dollars of revenue in her career. ​Her leadership has been recognized with a variety of awards, including as a Rick Hansen Difference Maker medalist, finalist in the Celebration of People Awards and named one of the Amazing People in Canada's National Capital Region. Throughout her career, Jan gained a unique insight into the challenges that women face when trying to navigate their professional goals when they aren’t presented with a roadmap to follow. Jan created the roadmap and now teaches women the effective action steps to take in order to build their first business or move their career in the direction that best serves them.

2:10pm to 3:10pm EST - Virtual Practice - Now and Into the Future​

A panel of DC, College, and Prolink representatives will share their perspectives on virtual practice and answer your questions on cross-border counseling and insurance requirements for your business. Attendees will be able to submit questions prior to this session.

Panelists:
Lisa McKellar, MA, RD is the National Lead of Policy & Government Relations for Dietitians of Canada. After more than 20 years, Lisa’s career has spanned dietetic practice and included roles across the health system in policy and program development, quality improvement, clinical nutrition and education. Her professional experience has included leadership roles within both a health authority and a government ministry. Lisa completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Saskatchewan and dietetic training with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. She holds a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University.

Joanie Bouchard completed a bachelor in dietetic and a master in research at the University of Montreal. Before turning her interest to professional regulation, she worked in various health care facilities as a registered dietitian. In 2012, she started working at the Ordre professionnel des Diététistes du Québec in quality assurance and practice advisory. In 2017, she moved across Canada to become the Registrar of the College of Dietitians of BC where she oversees all aspects of dietetic regulation. Joanie was a guest speaker at many health and dietetic conferences in the past. She is a strong believer in evidence-based and data informed practice and policies.
