Capturing the Full Value of Dietitians' Skills: Optimizing Post-COVID Opportunities

While the Covid-19 Pandemic might feel like history, research conducted among Nova Scotia dietitians identified significant career trends and opportunities for dietitians working across sectors that emerged during that time. This seminar discusses these trends and shares action steps for dietitians, dietetic educators and employers of dietitians, to optimize dietitians' broad knowledge and skillsets.

Objectives:

  1. To promote the strengths, skills and knowledge that dietitians bring to the workforce and communities.

  2. To bring attention to emerging roles for dietitians, in the post pandemic work environment.

  3. To advocate for optimizing dietitians’ expertise to strengthen health systems in Canada.

  4. To promote collaboration among dietetic educators to offer innovative experiential learning opportunities.

Meet the speakers:

Barbara Anderson

Barb Anderson retired in 2021 from her position as Director of the School of Nutrition and Dietetics at Acadia University in Wolfville NS, assuming that position in 2009 after a 30-year career with Nova Scotia Public Health. Her research focus was primarily related to food security, having been involved with the NS Food Security projects for over 25 years. She also has been engaged in enhancing learning opportunities for dietetic students. Through courses she taught at Acadia, Barb supported the development of an ongoing partnership between the Wolfville Farmers’ Market and the School of Nutrition and Dietetics. She continues to work with the local community around healthy food issues.

Barb was President of the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association, Chair of Dietitians of Canada, and President of the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research. She is a Fellow of Dietitians of Canada and honored with a Life Membership by both the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada. She was the ‘nutrition voice’ on the CBC radio Maritime Noon phone-in program for 20 years and has been an invited speaker at over 50 provincial, national, and international conferences. Currently, Barb is on the executive of the Acadia Alumni Association Board of Directors and dabbles in facilitation work to support groups meeting their goals.

 

Ann Fox

Ann Fox has enjoyed a 40-year career as a dietitian, administrator, educator and researcher.  Ann completed her undergraduate degree in Food and Nutrition at Toronto Metropolitan University, a dietetic internship at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and a Master of Health Science degree in Community Nutrition at the University of Toronto. After working in clinical and administrative roles in women’s health, diabetes education, chronic disease prevention, Ann obtained a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Toronto and went on to leadership roles at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (University of Toronto), and the Department of Human Nutrition at St Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and the School of Business at Nipissing University in North Bay Ontario, where she is currently the Associate Dean (interim).

Education is central to Ann’s work including program innovation, curriculum design, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her focus is on supporting learners through creativity and innovation, advancing professional practice, and community engagement. Ann is currently part of a national task force examining development of the public health nutrition workforce in Canada.

Ann works toward reconciliation and has partnered with Mi’kmaw leaders and communities in Nova Scotia to support Indigenous food systems, and to bring Two-Eyed Seeing and Indigenous ways of knowing to courses she has taught.
