Join the Sustainable Food Systems Network for an exclusive DC Member webinar on January 29.
Sustainable diet principles have remained largely consistent over the past decade; however, the food systems in which dietitians practice have evolved rapidly and continue to present new challenges and opportunities. This webinar brings together two complementary perspectives to support Dietitians of Canada members in translating sustainability evidence into practical, meaningful action.
Barbara Seed will begin by reflecting on how the concept and language of sustainability in nutrition have evolved over the past decade. While the foundational principles of sustainable diets remain unchanged, the broader food system context — influenced by climate change, policy shifts, supply chain pressures, and changing client realities — has transformed. This session will explore how sustainability has been understood, how it is currently practiced, and how dietitians can uphold core values while adapting to an increasingly complex environment.
Building on this systems-level perspective, Liesel Carlsson will draw from the 2025 report Seven Strategies for Advancing Sustainable Dietary Patterns. This presentation will highlight evidence-informed actions dietitians are well positioned to lead, introducing practical leverage points, the rationale behind them, and tangible ways to begin integrating these strategies across diverse practice settings.
Together, these presentations will guide participants from understanding today’s pressures to identifying clear, actionable steps they can take now.
This webinar is Part 1 of a series. A future session (Part 2) will feature research led by Katy Saucis, examining the barriers and facilitators dietitians experience when incorporating environmentally sustainable food systems into clinical and healthcare food service practice.
