About the presenter:

Catherine Morley, PhD, RD, FD

Catherine’s interests include the lived experiences of eating when seriously ill and of feeding a loved one who is sick, dietetics pedagogy, critical nutrition counselling, and how these intersect. This work emerged from her 20+ years of working in cancer care which inspired her doctoral studies on how meanings of eating change when living with illness, and how understandings of this phenomenon inform approaches to nutrition programs and services.

In her teaching and research, Catherine draws upon loved ones’ experiences of eating during
times of serious illness and those of their primary caregivers. She is a member of the Board of Caregivers Nova Scotia and the Board of the NS & NB ALS Society. Cath has found it
alarming/worrying when others on Boards have asked why a dietitian would be interested in
caregiving. (The same question came up in serving on a committee of the Canadian
Professional Association for Transgender Health). This points to a generally limited view of the role of dietitians and informs her role as a dietetics educator to promote advocacy and community building as integral to dietetic practice.

Catherine holds a PhD in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (U Calgary), an MA in Adult Education (UBC), a BASc in Applied Human Nutrition (U Guelph), diplomas in Textile Arts and Documentary Film (Capilano U), and completed a Dietetic Internship at Vancouver General Hospital.
