Dietitians have a responsibility to provide sound nutrition care based on recognition, respect and maintenance of the cultural identity of every patient and clients. Attendees will learn about the steps involved in providing culturally safe nutrition care to meet the needs, expectations and rights of their clients.
 
This webcast featuring dietitian Piraveena Piremathasan, PDt, CDE, CBE will include an engaging and interactive session followed by small group networking. Connect virtually with colleagues from across Canada and advance your learning in this important area.

Addressing cultural competency and cultural safety in nutrition practice
Cultural safety is the continuum of the following building blocks: cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity and cultural competence. Dietitians have the opportunity to work with diverse populations in various clinical settings. They have a responsibility to provide sound nutrition care based on recognition, respect and maintenance of the cultural identity of every patient and client. During this event, attendees will learn about the steps involved in providing culturally safe nutrition care to meet the needs, expectations and rights of their clients.
 
This presentation will help you to:
  • Define steps for the provision of culturally competent and culturally safe care in healthcare environments
  • Identify the challenges faced by health professionals to improve cultural competency and cultural safety in practice
  • Discuss strategies for implementing a culturally safe care in nutrition practice
 
Speaker: Piraveena Piremathasan PDt, CDE, CBE is a dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator and Certified Bariatric Educator practicing in Montreal, Quebec. She has worked as a Community Nutritionist at the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay, and as a Diabetes Educator at LMC Diabetes & Endocrinology. Currently, she is employed as a Clinical Dietitian at the CIUSSS West-Central Montreal. Piraveena is passionate about improving access to nutrition and health education to Montreal residents that come from many different backgrounds. She volunteers as the Co-Chair for the Mavis Verronneau Diabetes Canada Professional Chapter and as a Dietitian/Diabetes Project Manager for the Montreal Tamil Health Initiative. Her efforts have been recognized by Dietitians of Canada, and she has been awarded the 2020 Member Recognition Award in the Association Catalysts category.

La sécurité culturelle est le continuum des éléments constitutifs suivants : la conscience culturelle, la sensibilité culturelle et la compétence culturelle. Les diététistes ont la chance de travailler avec des populations diverses en différent milieux. Ils ont la responsabilité d'assurer des soins nutritionnels appropriés avec la reconnaissance, le respect et l'entretien de l'identité culturelle de chacun de leurs clients. Dans cette conférence, les participants découvriront les étapes à suivre pour fournir des soins nutritionnels culturellement sécuritaires pour répondre aux besoins, attentes et droits de leurs patients.
