Enhancing Cultural Competence in Counselling Plant-Based Clients: Focus on Punjabi Culture

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Define ‘plant-based’, list and understand the general types of plant-based diets, and better understand why a client may choose to go plant-based.
  2. Understand how to help clients build balanced and culturally appropriate plant-based meals, with a focus on Punjabi traditions and cuisine.
  3. Recall the uses and benefits of common Punjabi foods and spices.

About the presenter

Prabhjot Kaur is a dietitian who owns and operates her virtual private practice, NutriKaur, where she focuses on plant-based nutrition and advocates for a holistic all foods fit approach to help clients meet their individual goals sustainably. She currently resides in London, Ontario and is registered with the College of Dietitians of Ontario.
Prab completed a Bachelor of Science, Honours Specialization in Nutrition and Dietetics from Western University, after which she completed her dietetic internship at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, Ontario. Prior to this, Prab completed a Bachelor of Science, Honours Specialization in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Psychology from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from McGill University.
Prab is dedicated to providing culturally competent services to her Punjabi community and strives to help other healthcare professionals enhance their cultural competence in counselling this population.
