The Integrative and Functional Nutrition Network (IFN) is a national group of dietitians interested in expanding their knowledge and practice in integrative and functional nutrition. The network provides education, resources, and a forum for discussion to support members in applying these approaches in practice.
Our objectives:
- Offer webinars and continuing education opportunities
- Share resources and emerging research
- Provide a platform for discussion and professional exchange
How we define Integrative and Functional Nutrition:
Integrative medicine combines conventional medical treatments (e.g., medication, surgery) with complementary practices* to support whole person health, which includes mind, body, and spirit. It is grounded in the understanding that health is shaped by interconnected biological, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors.
Integrative nutrition applies these principles to nutrition care. It emphasizes understanding the whole client story and the many influences on diet, eating patterns, and nutritional status. Integrative nutrition interventions are evidence-informed, tailored to individual needs, and may incorporate complementary practices* when appropriate.
Functional nutrition is a more focused component of integrative medicine. It uses a systems-biology framework to examine how diet interacts with genetics, environment, and lifestyle. This field also draws on insights from -omics research, including nutritional genomics and microbiomics. Functional nutrition relies on comprehensive assessments and evidence-based personalized nutrition strategies, including targeted dietary interventions and lifestyle modifications, to support optimal health.
*Complementary practices include therapies with long cultural histories, such as acupuncture, mindfulness, and herbal remedies. Practitioners should not attempt to redefine or take ownership of these practices but rather respect their origins and acknowledge their role when chosen by individuals to support health and well-being.
