Ingredients for building a community-based health promotion program

Successful community-based health promotion programs are those that are supported by multiple partners and stakeholders from a variety of sectors including government, private business, not-for-profit organizations, as well as other health professionals, community businesses and organizations. The 'Common Roots Urban Farm/Mobile Food Market', based in Halifax, and 'Eat Great and Participate', based in Newfoundland and Labrador, are examples of programs that originated as pilot projects to address issues of access to healthy food and beverage options, specifically food insecurity and the variety of unhealthy options in the recreation, sport and community settings, respectively. Session objectives include identifying the key people and supports required to start a successful program, and how best to evaluate program outcomes.
