Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), the gut microbiome and low FODMAP diets: Putting the puzzle pieces together

Welcoming all Health professionals including RDs, RNs, MDs, SW, Pharmacists, Interns and Students. This session will offer participants the ability to learn new research findings in the area of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Speakers will cover the impact of the microbiome as it relates to IBS. Participants will also learn the impact of low FODMAP diets on clients diagnosed with IBS. 

SPEAKERS

  • Dr. Phillip Sherman, MD, FRCPC,  is Professor of Pediatrics, Microbiology, Nutritional Sciences, & Dentistry at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto where he has been on faculty since 1984.  Dr. Sherman is a Past-President of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and a Past-President of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. He is the recipient of a Canada Research Chair (tier 1) in Gastrointestinal Disease (2001-02).  His research interests focus on epithelial cell signal transduction responses to pathogenic, commensal and probiotic bacteria. Dr. Sherman is Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes. 
  • Ruth Harvie, RD is a registered dietitian with ten years clinical dietetic experience, in the later years working predominantly on a surgical ward and covering gastroenterology and respiratory. She completed a Masters degree investigating the efficacy of a low FODMAP in 2013 and is working on her PhD as a major focus is the microbiome. She is based at the Canadian center for human microbiome and probiotic research at the Lawson Research Institute in London, Ontario
