Dietitians ready to provide input to Dietary Guidance consultation following awaited announcement
Jun 10, 2017
ST JOHN’S, NL–The Honourable Minister Jane Philpott chose the Dietitians of Canada 2017 National Conference to announce the launch of a second Health Canada consultation on the proposed revision Dietary Guidance and Canada’s food guide, as well as restrictions on marketing of food and beverages to children. Joël Lightbound, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for the riding of Louis-Hébert, made the announcement. Dietitians of Canada and its members will participate in this consultation, which will take place over the coming weeks, ending July 25.
“We have been eagerly anticipating action toward a new Dietary Guidance policy in Canada, based on the most recent nutrition evidence and with new food guide resources adapted for the various populations with whom we work,” says Pat Vanderkooy, dietitian and Manager of Public Affairs for Dietitians of Canada. “Across Canada, dietitians empower their patients, clients and communities to embrace food and its connection to health. Dietary guidance will play an important role in shaping food policy for Canada.”
“Dietitians of Canada has long called for mandatory restrictions on the marketing foods and beverages to children. Children deserve to be protected from targeted marketing from the food industry that negatively influences their food preferences. We are happy to see the development of regulations as part of the Healthy Eating Strategy,” says Vanderkooy. “This along with the other components of the Strategy, including front of package labelling, will improve the food environment, making it easier for Canadians to make healthier choices.”
More information on the consultation process can be found on the Health Canada website. Member of the public and dietitians are encouraged to complete the consultation survey. Members of Dietitians of Canada wishing to participate in this and other consultations are also encouraged to visit the Dietitians of Canada website.
