Campaign Info

Dietitians are key in helping Canadians Unlock the Potential of Food this Nutrition Month.

March is Nutrition Month and this year builds on the 2018 campaign that saw dietitians help Canadians Unlock the Potential of Food.  Everyday dietitians help Canadians unlock the potential of food to enhance lives, improve health, inspire children, fuel activities and bring people together.

Dietitians in communities and workplaces across the country will host events during March. We encourage community leaders and other health professionals to connect and coordinate with local dietitians when planning Nutrition Month events.

Dietitians Day

Once a year, a special day is dedicated to dietitians across Canada. This year, Dietitians Day will be celebrated on March 20.  Find out more and get resources to help celebrate dietitians as the trusted choice for reliable life-changing food and nutrition advice.

The history of Nutrition Month

For over 30 years, Nutrition Month has been the most visible public awareness campaign for the profession, reaching millions of Canadians. It began in the late 1970’s as a “Nutrition Week” with a small group of community dietitians. Local dietitians across several provinces then began planning events and activities in their workplaces, shopping malls, libraries and with the media. In 1981, The Canadian Dietetic Association (now Dietitians of Canada) and all the provincial dietetic associations jointly sponsored the first National Nutrition Week. The primary purpose of the Campaign was to increase public awareness about the importance of healthy eating by identifying dietitians as the most credible source of food and nutrition information.  By the end of the decade, the campaign was expanded to a month.

Each year, a Nutrition Month theme is selected by Dietitians of Canada based on a scan of the environment and with input from members. Themes have varied from the 1988 campaign on “Healthy Weights in 88” to “Nourishing our Children’s Future” in 1994 to “Get the real deal on your meal” in 2012 to “Take the Fight out of Food” in 2017.

We count on the input and support of members, the public, ambassadors and our campaign sponsors to make the annual campaign a success.
