National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A time to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and to reflect on the lasting impacts of residential schools. It is also a time to recognize reconciliation as an ongoing process and building a more respectful, stronger relationship with Indigenous Peoples.

For the dietetic profession, this day is an opportunity to reflect on the role nutrition science and dietetics have played in colonial harm—including the involvement of dietitians in nutrition experiments conducted in residential schools (see Ian Mosby’s work here.)

This year, we encourage our members and the profession to pause, learn, and engage with resources and events that support understanding and reconciliation:

🔸 Assembly of First Nations: It’s Our Time Toolkit
🔸 National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation: Free Virtual Lunch & Learns
🔸 Commemorative Gathering on Parliament Hill (Sept 30 at 3 p.m. ET, also livestreamed)

We also invite DC members to join the Indigenous Nutritional Knowledge Information Network (INKIN). INKIN connects dietitians working in Indigenous communities to share resources, participate in continuing education, engage in collective reflection, and spark action for food justice and equity. Members benefit from monthly digests with traditional recipes, practice insights, and opportunities to collaborate with peers.

Let’s take this day to listen, learn, and reflect—together.
